Background

The original DSP platform wasn’t designed for mobile and the calls for a proprietary app is getting more and more prominent. However, with 100% of the revenue came from the website and an major API upgrade as the highest priority task at that time, the team treated the project with extreme caution. Due to the amount of data and complexity of the platform, the goal is to make an reporting only app that is compatible with new API. We’ve brought in an external developer team and another product manager into the whole process.

ROLE

Product Manager

TEAM

API-Dev Team, QA Team, Product Marketing Team, Project Manager, Support Engineering Team, External Dev Team

TIME FRAME

6 months

Challenges

  1. All the reporting metrics were not designed with mobile app in mind.

  2. Working with another product manager in US resulted in longer decision making process.

  3. iOS and Android version developed at the same time and involved external Dev team.

Process

Product Feature Validation  >  Product Design  >  Develop Iteration > QA

product feature validation

The mobile app of the real time bidding platform was strictly confidential and was treated as an experiment project by then. I was teamed up with another product manager, 2 API teams in the US, 1 external app engineering team and 1 QA team based in Chengdu. The biggest challenge was to keep the iOS and Android version consistent. Also we worked closely with the API teams since some parameters needed to be optimized for mobile. Some features were cut at the last minute due to API restrictions. The MVP features we set to achieve were:

- Monitor real-time campaign performance and analytics
- Easily pause and activate placements
- Make updates to budgets, bids and site lists
- Gain insights from top performing placements
- Share feedback with your account team

Check key metrics on mobile app

I didn’t keep any wireframes nor product documents for confidential reasons and the above picture was the only piece of mock up I kept. You can notice the wireframe is pretty close to the actual release below. High fidelity mock up worked the wonder in minimizing confusion & misunderstandings especially with external Dev teams.

iOS was well received by user

Android got a mixed feedback due to optimization issues

The mobile app had received a positive feedback on iOS. However the Android version got a mixed reception at 3.4 out of 5, If given more time and resources we would put more Q&A and optimization for Android. We have added some minimal editing features such as placement duration. reporting metrics, budget adjustment, etc.
